Can some of you who have done the competitions explain to me how they do the scoring? i haven't been able to find that part of the site yet...
any stories? tips/advice?
my husband and i this past year have aquired a Border Collie who can't get enough of water! She was a house dog the first year of her life and never saw water, when she found our pool, she jumped in and couldn't get enough of it! We think that this is something i could do in the future with her and our soon to be extended family (i'm due anytime with our first daughter).
what do you think?
thanks so much for everyone's time! :-) looking forward to learning more about this sport.

Hey Jenny I can't help you out with the scoring, but we do also live in Bakersfield, we have a lab who is going to Wags for his first competition in a couple of weeks. Anyhow, maybe our dogs could get together and have some fun. With the fact we have no docks here makes things diffucult, but we do like to go out to The Park at Riverwalk with him. We are in the process of looking for a dock somewhere near here. Let us know if you know of any.... Thanks

Can the dock be any type? like a regular wooden boating dock? I asked my brother about it and he said Lake Ming allows dogs and they have the boating docks there. Lake Buena Vista does too, but i think they have a new rule with the dog thing. we had wanted to take Jennie out there when we went waterskiing with my husband's brother and parents but we learned there was this new rule out there about it. like they have to be leashed at all times and are not allowed in the water now. before it was different, but i guess they've had a couple cases and eventually got sued so they had to make a new rule. But as far as i know, Lake Ming still allows dogs and all that and they have boating docks out there.
otherwise i'll keep eyes open. I'm due anytime now with the baby (i was "due" two days ago) but hopefully by the middle - end of July i'll be able to go out and do stuff. plus it'll be warm enough for Jennie to REALLY want to get into the water. i might also have to get my husband to keep his swimming trunks on and jump in with her her first time off the dock. haha. usually if she does it just once, she'll think it awesome and will do it a million times more. plus you'll have gone through your first competition so i'll be able to get lots of feedback from ya :-) good luck! first competitions are always fun and even somewhat nervewracking! your puppy is so cute!! i saw his myspace page :-) hehe. out of curiosity, would you or anyone you know be interested in a black lab? he's about 2 yrs old. he belongs to my inlaws and they're moving to the coast. They want to take him with them soo bad, but so far they haven't been able to find anything in their budget that allows dogs of his size. So they're going to continue to look, but if worse comes to worse, they might have to find a home for him..
his name is Bruno and he's a BIG ball player! tons of energy BUT, he's been an only dog all of his life, he'd probably only be able to get along is one or two other dogs that would nice and playful to him. don't know how he is with cats and they've taken him to the beach i think, so he might like the water. but he's a big loveable ball of energy. so if you could just keep it in mind, just in case my inlaws would have to sacrifice him, i'd appreciate it.. :-)

Hey thanks for the tips, and goodluck with the delivery of your beautiful baby!!!!
My only issue with Lake Ming is that the water has parisites in it. They can cause a red itchy rash for people so I haven't taken Andy there because I don't want something to happen with him. BV does have the on leash rule, plus a fee of 10 a day if you have a dog. So I don't know. My only thoughts are maybe if me could find a pool we could build a dock. Anyone out there have any ideas? Well keep in touch, we'll talk soon.

As far as the scoring, the distance is measured where the base of the dog's tail enters the water. Each "wave" which is a competition consists of a competitor taking 2 jumps. The best of the two jumps is your score for that wave and determines your placement.
Dogs are placed in divisions according to how far they jump in a wave. Dogs that jump 0-9'11" are in the splash division, 10'-14'11" is the junior division, 15'0-19'11" is senior, 20'-22'11" is pro and 23'0"+ is extreme. You might be in one division in one wave and another division in another wave. You earn a title after 5 jumps in a division.
For more information, check out our rules page at: http://splashdogs.com/events/rules/
and our titles info at:

Also, feel free to post additional questions here!

I too live in Bakersfield and have a border collie who can not get anough water. Do you have a place you practice at? How did you get started. I would love to meet up sometime and get some tips on how to dock dive with my dog. We have been taking her out to the river walk off stockdale and she loves it there. My friend and I were trying to think of where in Bakersfield had a dock we could practice with her on. Other then building our own smaller version we could not think of anything. Though my girl will jump off anything that I have tried.

I guess I should have read the posts before replying. I was just so excited to see people in Bakersfield on here and looking to do the same thing. Like I said before I would love to get the dogs together for a swim out at the Riverwalk if anyone is interested. Between my friend and I we have 8 border collies, 1 chihuahua and a weimaraner. Most of whom all love to swim, but my female border is a freak. She can and will swim for 4 hours straight. I had to lock her in a crate last time to keep her from getting too tired and she threw the biggest fit. My friend and I were trying to figure out some kind of easy ramp to build that is portable enough we could bring it with us out there. We would love to meet up with anyone who is interested. Who knows maybe we can get a little group started here in Bako.

We are in going to get some measurements and try to build a dock suitable. In the mean time Andy would love to get together and play. What does your schedule look like?

There are a couple people we can maybe try to get ahold of if we can get a place to dive.
Candis (Splashdogs ID: Need2getalife) is willing, as far as i know, to come to instruct classes on weekends if we can get enough people and a place to do it. She lives in Hanford.
Also another person to get in touch with is "Fillygirl56" is her splashdogs ID. I've already messaged her and am waiting for a reply. But she's a member of the Bakersfield Agility Dogs Club and is also looking for a Dock Dog/Flyball instructor (Candis does both), we might have a good deal going on if we can all get together and schedule different times when Candis can come down and do two classes in the same day (Like Flyball towards early evening when it cools down and the Dock Jumping earlier since it involves water.), make it worth her while.
Maybe we can get in touch and see if we could add this type of division into the Bakersfield Agility Dogs? The membership will be a plus, we can advertise it with their site, it'd be great to promote the sport and it might help with people who might want to eventually do competitions. Even think about some kind of carpooling in the future (Not a TON of people per car of course, but definitly with people who's dogs are compatible.) to the competitions.
What do you guys think?
Just some idea's to throw out there... :)

I wouldnt mind traveling to Hanford every now and then to practice. There is a flyball team here in town that is starting up. I believe it is called tailspin. It is run by a lady named Linda. I have her information if anyone is interested. Anyone who would like to meet out at Riverwalk and talk about maybe building a ramp feel free to email me at Redhotbcs@aim.com. Like I said before I would love to go out with other people, especially if they have any clue about this, since I don't.

Redhot, were you at the riverwalk yesterday? my mom was out walking and said she had saw a person out throwing frisbee's into the water with their Border Collie. i was wondering if that was you since you had said you go out to the riverwalk alot...
Anyways, here is what i'm wanting to know. I've emailed a couple people on KCA and they're forwarding along my email to a couple of the Officers so i can see if we can't get up enough interest to start a Dock Dock/Dock Jumping venue of the club...
So everyone that's in Bakersfield, please send me an email with how many people (if it's just yourselves OR if you know of anyone that would be interested in becoming a member for this division) that you and/or people you know that would be interested in joining.
I'm trying to get options as far as a location to do the practice. I emailed Buena Vista Lake seeing if they would make a special exception under their circumstances and/or fee's, if not, i'll email the instructor, Candis, again and see if we wouldn't be able to travel up to Hanford at their private lake for lessons. If we can get Buena Vista, besides Candis, Beau Clark (who does the stockdog and obediance training for KCA) is willing to look up and try to help us because he's had previous training instruction with agility, so if we're willing to work together, he's willing to help out.
My email is horseluvin07@yahoo.com if anyone wants to email me personally, whether it's who ever is a member on the site or if you want to pass along my email to friends that would be interested. Thanks a bunch. :-)

No it was not me out at the river walk. I was out at Beau Clarks doing herding with my borders. Small world hu? I will email him and let him know I am one of the people who are wanting to do this. He is a real nice guy to work with. If I am at the river walk everyone knows it. We (my friend and I) go out there with 8 or 9 dogs.
I am up to traveling every now and then, though it's not somthing I have alot of time for. I am doing herding, obedience, rally and flyball right now. So my plate is packed. Though I still want to do this.
Hopfully BV will be cool enough to let us come practice out there. That would be easy and convinent. Thanks for contacting them.

Thanks and good job on being so proactive. Let us know what you hear back from them... We took Andy to Lake Isabella today, there is a dock, but its really hard to get to use because there are so many people loading/unloading their boats. We did however get a few jumps in, it's just very time consuming with all the waiting.

Come up to Vallejo on a week-day. You can practice with your dog all day except when there is competition for only 10.00. To enter in a wave is 20.00... You will have great fun and get alot of training or advice.

Vallejo is a little too far for me to travel to practice, plus I work during the week as a groomer, so taking a day off doesn't work too well for me. Thanks for the offer though.

redhot, right on! yeh, it looks like there's a ton that you're doing. ask Beau about our red BC, Scarlette, that he's training. :-) he loves her to death! he wanted to buy her from us, but we compromised and he's breeding her to one of his male's in trade for obediance training for our male. he also traded both of our pups from her last litter for a pick of the litter from Scarlette and his male and another pick of the litter from another registered litter of his. so if he ever brings around a little blue female or male BC, those were bred by us. we were so proud of our little BC parents for such a good first litter. hehe.
anyways, thanks a bunch for the support. hopefully one of the KCA officers or one of the BVL officers will email me back within the next week or so. then i'll know more from there. remember to ask your friends if they'd like to get into it!!! :)
here's pictures of the two pups and scarlette...

ha, yay! he told us Scarlette did pretty good for not having any real experience. she's the second half of our dynamtic duo with Jennie. those two together get into the most trouble when we're not around to supervise.
is your dog in any of the pictures on the meetup site?? which one is he/she?

i was glad we got rid of that blue female when we did. i was trying my hardest no to get attatched to her. her personality is just like Scarlette's and she had decided to glue herself to me when we'd take her out.. another month and i would've wanted her to become my own stockdog :P

Yes two of my borders are in the pictures taken from the intro to herding class. I own the only other red border that was there. There are some pics of Beau working her. Then my black and white male Aero (they spelled it Arrow) was in there too. No pics of my new girl in there, but she is also another red border.
I know what you mean about not getting attached. I just had a litter of pups born April 2nd, luckily all but one had a home by 6 weeks old. The last one just went to his new home two weeks ago or so. Great little boy.

Hi - Just a quick correction to the post by The Jenny's. Bakersfield Agility Dog was renamed Kern Canine Activities many months ago. "FillyGirl56" is not a member and as far as I know, has never been involved with dock diving; just wanted to be. Also I can say with a fair amount of certainty that Candis won't be offering any splash dog training to Bakersfield; not sure where this rumor started. Also, Beau does not do any training for KCA, and is not a dock diving or agility instructor as you have previously stated. This is a lot of misinformation...you may want to double check your sources.

Hey there little red, welcome. Thanks for the information. While I am not yet a member of the KCA I have been trying to go to as many of their activities as possible. I assume since you know all the information you are also in Bakersfield.
Beau is very seperate from the KCA though he does have some obedience classes and herding classes. There are so many people with so many different clubs here in Bakersfield it is hard to keep track sometimes. Again thanks for posting the correct information for everyone.

all the information i've been getting has been through my husband who has been talking to him. he told us he does agility training (though not actual classes) and he has advertised all of his stuff on the KCA (i was corrected for the KCA awhile ago, so that i was aware of) meetup site for stockdog classes and obediance classes. i apologize for any ignorance on my part about Beau with KCA, from the way it was talked about from my husband, i just assumed it. but i got the information on the agility and dock dog stuff through Beau himself, again, he did not mention he did actual instruction on it, but said he would be willing to help, i was told he knew agility and dock jumping and he would be willing to help out with anything as far as the dock jumping goes.
Candis i've been talking to personally and there was some confusion between emails, but have been getting more information as we've talked. part of the confusion was the lake she had, is actually a lake provided only for their family, so is not able to hold classes or anything on it. There is also some other information that was given me as far as some suggestions, so if anyone would like to know, please private message me.
again i apologize for anything said that was confused, but my resources weren't completely incorrect, just off with lack of information from the same sources.
