View Full Version : Marilyn Barrett's Surgery

Just want to let everyone know that Marilyn Barrett (Phoebe and Dunkin's Mom) is having back surgery on Monday. Marilyn has been in a great deal of pain for months now, from a cyst in her back that is pressing on a nerve. It causes her a lot of pain in her back and leg.
The doctors wanted her to have the surgery many many months ago, but Marilyn knew that the recovery period would be about 3 months, so she told the doctors that she was going to postpone the surgery until July 16th, BECAUSE she wanted Phoebe and Dunkin to have the fun of participating in the Wags FOR WISHES event again this year. Now, that is a dedicated Mom.
Anyone who saw Marilyn climb those stairs to the dock FOUR times in each wave (two dogs per wave) and walk around handing out water to the volunteers all weekend long know that she was in pain, but she will do anything for Phoebe and Dunkin.
Please send her your good wishes for a speedy recovery. She already has her hotel reservations for Cynopsorts, so we know we will see all three of them and her husband Marty there healthy, happy, and ready to HAVE FUN!!!!!!

I just talked to Marty, Marilyn's husband, and he said that Marilyn got out of surgery at 10am this morning. The operation went very well and they removed the cyst and she is now back in her hospital room and is resting comfortably. The doctor said that the cyst was pressing against the nerve in such a way that it must have been very painful.
Marty told Marilyn that we have all been sending her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Marty will probably call me again tonight or tomorrow with an update and Cindy plans to take her puppy, Sadie, there to visit Tuesday night, so we should have another update for eveyone soon.
Can you believe that Sadie can go into a hospital to visit? Isn't that cool? Can you imagine Chase in a hospital??? Yikes!

I cannot even believe they let the dogs in the HOTELS!
Can you just see Chase and some of our dogs running down the halls of a hospital, jumping up on the beds, and wolfing down the patients' food?
Sadie is in a league of her own. But then again, we will see how she handles the situation considering she is a DRUG dog. A DRUG dog in a Hospital! Oops! Hide the Oxycotin!!!!!

I just got off the phone with Marilyn. She is doing well, but unfortunately they have to go back in and do a second surgery. When they took the original x-rays before the surgery, they only saw the cyst. But, when they went in, they found that she also had a slipped disc that was moving around. Apparently they did not see that on the x-rays (argh!). Otherwise, they could have fixed it during the first surgery .
So, now they are trying to find an open operating room to go back and fuse the disc in place. Marilyn is hoping that they can do it in the next day or two. Otherwise, the doctors may make her wait a month (yikes!) for the second operation, which would prolong the recovery much longer.
She said she told the doctor "Now listen, we are on a TIGHT schedule here! I need to be fully recovered by November 1st for Cynopsorts!". Good for her! I like a person who has her priorities straight!
Anyway, hopefully they will get her back in an operating room in the next day or two and then she has to wear a back brace for three months.
So, Marty (her husband) will have to take care of Dunkin and Phoebe by himself a little longer. They had just removed all the old fencing around their yard and were replacing it with new fencing, when a neighbor complained to the City (nice neighbor huh!) and all work has now stopped until a special "soil report" can be completed. So, here is Marty with two rambuncuous dogs stuck in the house because the yard has no fencing and his wife is away in the hospital for longer than expected because they missed the slipped disc. Marty said to me "We will get by, but Cats are easier!".

Hi all,
Sadie and I just returned from the hospital seeing Marilyn. She actually looks great. She is in pain and really can't move around much. She had just finished eating dinner when we got there so she was sitting up eating, which was unbelievable seeing her sitting up so soon. She did have to have a nurse help her lay back down. But she looks great.
She will be going back in for the other surgery tomorrow (Wednesday), there was an cancelation so her doctor took it. She is looking forward to it (well as much as you could look forward to it) but feels she can now get on the road to recovery from both and be ready for November.
Marty came in while I was there and he is hanging in there. Phoebe and Dunken actually have a 10 x 10 run they stay in (while the fencing is being worked on) and he will be taking them to the park in the next day or so.....
As for Sadie in the hospital, Marty and Marilyn could not believe the good little girl she was. She gave Marilyn some kisses and laid on the floor being a perfect therapy dog. She really knows the different roles she has. As a therapy dog with her vest on she is fully obeident. She knows she has a job to do and is really calm....As a Narcotics Dog she is fully UN-obeident and a spaz....I get brused up, sprained fingers and bit all the time. As you've seen her on the dock...sit/stay no way, just wants to have fun.
She just loves role playing, loves having jobs to do....her tail is always wagging and she is a happy girl.
We will be going back to the hospital in a couple of days to see Marilyn again, so I will report back later with her progress (or Brooke will, I'm sure she will be in touch with her also0

So sorry to hear about that second surgery. That's great Cindy that you get to bring Sadie into the hospital. When I was laid up Val (Howie's wife) brought Lucy over and it was very calming and comforting to me. As you know MickeyD could never comfort me!

Get well soon Marilyn. I had the same surgery (just done in one though) and I know you will be up and moving in no time flat. The best advice my surgeon gave me was to get up and walk. Acutally he wanted me to walk 3 miles the day I got home. Ha! I didn't walk that on a good day. But the walking really helped especially with the nerve damage and the pain down the leg. I was actually back at work (limited) in 9 days. Also good advice, get one of those grabbing sticks (as seen on tv type at walmart). You will be suprised at how many things you can drop. Another good investment is a toilet seat adapter to make it higher. Believe me, it was not something I thought about till after and will make a world of difference.

I just spoke with Marty on the phone and he said that Marilyn's second surgery went well. The doctor put in rods and screws to hold the L4 and L5 vertebrae in place. The doctor told Marty that they will watch and see if the bones grow and "fuse" together quickly. If they do grow quickly, then she will be fine. If they take too long to grow together, then they would have to go back in AGAIN (third surgery, geez! It's an HMO-that should explain it!) and fuse them together surgically.
Marty isn't quite sure, but he thinks that the doctor thinks it is better if the bones grow together themselves, rather than being fused surgically. Until they are fully fused, Marilyn has to wear a back brace to keep everything in place.
Sandra, you should be able to relate to all of this, because Marilyn will be in the same boat as you are (or were) in your brace, waiting for the bones to heal and grow.
Marty said Marilyn was still doped up, so he hoped to know more info about when she will be leaving the hospital and what to expect at home when she is more awake later today. She will probably be leaving the hospital before any cards could be received there, but I am sure she will appreciate reading the message boards with all your kind thoughts and interest when she gets home.
And, finally Phoebe and Dunkin are also doing well and probably gaining a little weight with Dad giving them extra doggie treats while Mom is away.

I called Marilyn twice today; this morning and then again a few minutes ago and BOTH times I called her, she was RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of her physical therapy. So, we were not able to talk at all and thus I have no new information to report.
I will try again later tonight and let you know as soon as I know anything, including when she gets to go home.

Sadie and I visited Marilyn again tonight. She has been in some pain. She said they keep bugging her to do physical therapy and just when she thinks she can get some sleep either she is in pain again or they are back in doing something with her, or her food is on its way. She did not get any rest till this afternoon.
It really sounded like she had a rough morning, but she now has her morphine drip button.... :-) and also was given zanax earlier so she is just fine now...nice smile on her face. They wanted to take her button (the button that controls the morphine) away and she would not let them.... :-)
All and all she is hanging in there and on her way to recovery. She is hoping to be able to go home sometime this weekend.
Marty came in while I was there so I told them both that I would be more than happy to drive up to there place and walk the puppies for them if they wanted me to this weekend.
I told her that there were alot of nice "get well wishes" on the message board for her and she wanted me to tell everyone "THANK YOU" she said everyone is so sweet..she can't wait to get home to see them all and answer everyone.
Take care,

I just spoke with Marilyn. The second surgery took a lot out of her. She is tired and in more pain than after the first one, hence the use of the morphine drip. But, she is toughing it out and looks forward to going home to recuperate. She thinks they might let her go on Saturday or Sunday.
I suggested that a swimming pool and spa in her back yard would help speed up her recovery. You know, one about 40 feet long with about 40 feet of room in front of it should she also want to install a dock! She thought it was a great idea and will suggest that Marty get right on it.
She was very appreciative and touched to hear that her fellow Splashdoggers were interested in how she was doing. She wants everyone to know that even while she is lying on her back in bed in her hospital room, she is spreading the word about Splashdogs. She put up pictures on her wall of Phoebe and Dunkin juming at an event, and whenever anyone sees them and asks what the dogs are doing, Marilyn gives them the full spiel and tells them to come to an event.

That is so nice of you to do. I will send you her mailing address by private message. She knows nothing about the magazine cover photo, so it will be a fun surprise for her!
I just spoke with Marilyn this morning and they have moved her into the Transitional Area of the hospital. She no longer needs the same type of care given to her in the regular part of the hospital, but at the same time she cannot fend for herself yet, so she still needs their help; hence she is now a transitional patient.
They took her morphine drip away (had to pry her thumb off of it) and are weaning her off the meds and doing physical therapy to help her get stronger and more self sufficient, so she can go home and recover.
Hopefully they will release her in the next couple of days. That is the latest.

Marilyn just told me that she has to continue to stay in the hospital until at least this weekend, because they need to teach her how to get around better by herself, before they can let her go home. So, I decided to tell her the good news that Dunkin and his Chicken made the cover of DD Magazine to cheer her up, instead of having her get the surprise when she gets home (Craig is mailing her a copy of the magazine).
She was very surprised and excited. Really perked her up! She said to tell Craig thank you for the magazine, as well as to tell everyone hi and that she cannot wait to see everyone again very soon.

Hi all,
Just returned home from visiting Marilyn.....she left me a voice mail the other day saying she needs some lab loven.....so Sadie and I were there for her. Sadie gave her some kisses and even tried to crawl into bed with her....:-)
She has the magazine right next to her bed...that is a great shot of Dunken....she is such a proud mommie....
Marilyn seems to be doing good....she is going home tomorrow (Sat)...and is pretty excitied about it...Marty came in while we were there and she was making sure he would run Phoebe and Dunken before he came to pick her up tomorrow (thinking they would be a bit tired out when she got home) No chance they will be so excitied to see their mommy. :-) as she is excitied to see them....
She got up and went into the restroom while we were there. I helped her get her walker and back brace and as she was putting the brace on...all of a sudden she was gone....into the rest room.....Marty and I were amazed at how fast she was....she seems to be getting around good, even thou it was only a few feet...but she is still in some pain.
I think once home she will start to do more on her own.....I'm going to try to get up to her house at least once a week and take the puppies out for a run.....and help her with what I can....Marty is planning on taking a couple of days off so that will help also.
But all and all she is strong, still having some pain...but hanging in there and getting stronger every day...

Well.........Marilyn was on her way home on Saturday. She was packed up and sitting in a chair and ready to go home, and then she experienced a set back, and the hospital did not let her go home. Her insurance company (HMO) wants her to leave the hospital, but the hospital does not think she is well enough to leave. A bit of a battle going on with Marilyn stuck in the middle.
Seems the hospital is adamant that she has to be able to climb at least five steps in order to be released from the hospital. She has five steps leading to her front door and if she cannot climb at least that many of the hospital stairs, then the hospital physical therapist dose not want her to go home. She started to climb the stairs in the hospital and her back went into spasms, and they had to return her to her room.
I talked with her today (Sunday) and she said she took today off from physical therapy to rest her back and will try the stairs again tomorrow and hopes to be released at that time. She definitely wants to be home, but she also agrees with the hospital that she should not go home until they think she is ready to tackle certain tasks.
That is the latest.

NEWS ALERT........"Marlilyn has left the building".....Marty picked her up from the hospital last night....she was able to climb the few steps to her front door.....she has to stay in the downstairs' guest bedroom until she is able to climb the stairs to get to her regular bedroom.....she must wear a back brace for three months whenever she is not lying down in bed.....Marty brought Phoebe and Dunkin into her room, one at a time, and they were very excited to see her after not seeing her for 2 weeks.....both dogs tried to jump up on the bed to get closer to her, but Marty had them on tight leashes.....Mailyn says she knows she has a long road still to go to recover and be mobile and pain free, but she feels so much better being home in her own house and bed.....she is confined to the downstairs and the computer is upstairs, so she cannot yet get to the message board to tell you all herself, how much she appreciates your interest in her and encouragement for her to get better.....I plan to go by her house and see her after work today and will update you after that visit.

Mike and I went to see Marilyn after work today. I expected to see her lying in bed, doped up on drugs, and in pain, but to my shock I found her sitting at the table in her kitchen with a big smile on her face. She said that she feels much better, now that she is home and off of most of the drugs that made her incoherent much of the time while she was in the hospital. She was wearing her back brace and using a walker to get around, mostly for balance.
Marty is taking great care of her and the dogs. After spending a few minutes with Marilyn, I went upstairs to see Phoebe and Dunkin, who instantly attacked me with hugs and kisses. Marty and I brought them downstairs to see Marilyn (on tight leashes) and both of the dogs were very excited, but quite uneasy and tentative around Marilyn. They kept pulling away from her. They seemed to sense that something was wrong and were uncomfortable being too close to her.
So, Marty stayed with Marilyn, and Mike and I took Phoebe and Dunkin for about a half hour walk. When we got back, the dogs were tired and much more relaxed, and after a few minutes Phoebe went over to Marilyn and nuzzled her and lay down beside her and a few minutes after that, Dunkin did the same. We stayed a few hours and had take-out pizza and lasagna with them. Marilyn asked Marty to let the dogs stay in the kitchen behind a doggie gate, so she could see them while we ate. She really missed them while she was in the hospital.
Marilyn is in some pain, but is trying to take as few pain pills as possible. They make her too loopy. And she is MUCH more mobile than I thought she would be. She actually is pretty fast with that walker. Her goal is to be able to start walking outside, maybe around a school track, sometime next week. And then in time, be able to have Phoebe and Dunkin join her on her walks.
So, in summary; she is home, she is happy, she is less drugged out, she is in less pain, her dogs are happy to see her and adapting to her current situation, and Marty is a real trooper keeping everything running smoothly.
Both she and Marty are really looking forward to her full recovery and getting together with everyone at Cynosports in November. That is the current situation!

I talked with Marilyn today. She had just returned home from about a 3 hour doctor visit...she was pretty tired out and sore. She had her stiches removed.
She sounds really good. Marty has been driving her to the park and she does some walking there. So it sounds like she is starting to heal somewhat.
She still is having some pain down her leg which she is being told could really take up to a year to totally go away.
I will talk more to her and get a better update this weekend, her door bell was ringing so she had to go....

Hi Everyone:
Marilyn is still confined to the downstairs area in her house, so she has not yet been able to get upstairs where her computer is located and talk to all of you on the message board. So, I am on the phone with her right now and she wants to say hi to all of you.
Brooke & Chase
"It has been 4 weeks since my operation. I can walk around without the walker. I use a cane only when I go to the park, when Marty drives me there. I am up to walking about 1 mile at the park. Phoebe and Dunkin have free range of the house now, but I still do not get to sleep with them, because they are not allowed to be in bed with me (too dangerous). So, they all (Marty, Phoebe, and Dunkin) sleep upstairs. The puppies are being so good, very cautious around me. I am not allowed to bend at the waist for at least another couple of weeks (very tough when you drop something on the floor, but that is what the dogs are for!), and I must wear the back brace for at least another month or so. I can go upstairs, but getting back down is pretty tough. So, basically I am confined to downstairs and hang out here all day. Did you know that with cable, you can pretty much watch "Law & Order" anytime of the day? Yes, that is what my life has become. But, I am healing, maybe even faster than they thought I would and I am looking forward to getting myself and the puppies back into shape and seeing all of you at Cynosports in November."

Big hugs Marilyn...stay safe and dont push yourself too much... I too found that Law & Order is on all day while I was down and out with the ankle. Oh man, I'll tell you, I got so tired of hearing that theme song.

Brooke,
Have Marty buy Marilyn a "Gopher" stick from WalMart. It worked wonderfully when I had my back surgery and dropped things. I think they are about $10.00 and I used mine as my cane for awhile too.

Hi Everybody!
It's great to be back checking out life with my extended family. When Brooke first told me she put word out on the board about my surgery, I figured it would probably go unnoticed but boy, you all sure surprised me with all the love. So many responses. I cannot begin to thank you for all the posts. It was great hearing all the news through Brooke & Cindy and having Sadie visit was wonderful. And, I would have loved to see MIckey D & Chase come visit! And, Tessa, Hershey Kiss, Jillie, etc,etc....
I am getting around really well and have to talk Marty into taking me to the park and walk every couple days & then talk him into taking the 'kids' to run around. I am enjoying spending time with my kids now which I couldn't at first but I am going stir crazy at home. I walk around in circles inside my house and now up & down the stairs a couple times a day but boring!!! Sandra, I don't know how you've put up with staying around the house as long as you have.
I really appreciated all the advice: i do have a 'grabber'stick and thanks Vince for your help you offered.
And a special thanks to Craig for the magazines with Dunkin on the cover. Thank you! I owe you big-time! That was such a special surprise!!
I can hardly wait to see you all at Cyno and give you all hugs back. I am going to try to get to Lancaster at least for a couple hours but I really wish I could see you all up north for the upcoming events. You'll have to jump once for me, please :) I miss you guys! And, yes, sign me up for the BBQ at Cyno ;-)
Love to all

Marilyn:
That picture on the cover is priceless. Did you see MickeyD in the back of the magazine. What an amazing shot Cera took. Take care and we hope to see you soon. By the way we went to the SRS in Reno a couple of weeks ago and paid $125.00 to jump MickeyD, well his first jump was 13' Boy was I excited! So I pluncked another $125.00 and well let's just say it wasn't his day! OUCH!

It's great to see you back. I will also be in Lancaster so if your not feeling up to it I will be more than glad to jump Dunkin and Phoebe for you. I love handling multiple dogs. See you on the docks.

Hey Sandra, Yes, I saw Mickey D inside the mag- didn't Cera get some great shots that day?
I guess Mickey D just wasn't in the mood to jump that day at the SRS ...but...did he stay??? :)
Brian, I appreciate your offer. I may just take you up on that-thanks! Watch Phoebe fly top the other side of the pool for you...lol. Probably not just cuz of your throws, either, you hunk ;-)
See ya
Marilyn

Urs,
Yes, I know it's just a fun jump and I will still be going. It will be good practice for Cyno.
Marilyn,
You know I would love to jump Phoebe. I have been wanting to jump her for a long time now and even if I can't I will stand in line for you you with the pups so you can jump them, either way it will be a good time for the dogs and us.
