Melissa is in Barona and they have been evacuated but she refuses to leave her horses. She has all her dogs with her and there is no way in or out at this point. This fire is not even close to being contained. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

I just got a text from Melissa - she is saving her phone batteries...

She said she is holding tight at the ranch. The fire is circling them and w/wind change could be on top of them in a heartbeat but they are holding steady.

I've read that homes have been destroyed in Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Forest Ranch and Lake Hodges. Ramona - where Melissa lives was completely evacuated this morning.

There is nothing we can do at this point but pray...

I am fine guys, we are nowhere near the fires at home or at work, however my daughter and grandson live in Santa Clarita. So far she is fine but may need to evacuate if it gets any worse and she and the grandbaby will just come to my house and all should be good.

Well , no wonder Melissa didn't answer the phone or has returned my call. I had heard on the news this morning that Ramona had been evacuated and called her on my way to work. I know what those horses mean to her and she will do whatever she can to keep them safe. Urs if you hear from Melissa please keep us informed as to the conditions there. Hello All,

Like Brian and Urs have said fire keeps Circling. One min. my mom and I are out watering barn area down along with house and toy box. The next min. it is clear as if nothing was even going on. Last night we got little to no sleep. Fire watch and wind gust up to 75 mph plus. This morning was a little rough. Wind did change this morning we were told that Fire would be at our back door within 10 min. Then about 20 min later wind changed again. Blew fire over mountain into Lakeside.

We have about 17 head of horses at ranch. it is amazing how calm they all are.

As for my home in Ramona I guess it is still standing. I heard that fire was within a block or two to the west of my house.

thoughts and prayers for all who have lost homes.

I am safe at this time.... Nite time is coming we are going to wait to see if winds change again.

thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. I am praying for RAIN!

Hi everyone,

Melissa, we are keeping good thoughts for you and all your animals and home...keep safe!

As for the rest of the above folks, all of us live in areas that are unaffected by the fires as of now.....

The only other person who is somewhat close to danger is Barbara Henderson with Henry....she is 5 miles from the San Marcos fire and has been issued a voluntary evacuation notice, so she is on close watch and ready to get out if needed.

Mike and Judy Bassett are stuck in Victorville because the 15 fwy is closed due to one of the fires....but their home is in the city....they as well as alot of other Flyball folks got stuck up there coming home from a Flyball tourny in Vegas....

I just got a call from Phyllis Cardoza (flyball folk for those of you who do not know her) asking if I had heard from any of the flyball people who lived down south and if anybody was in harms way with the fires. I told her what I knew about Melissa, Lisa, Lenae and Brian and she told me to please send prayers from Rocket Paws and their wishes for safety to all in need.

Wendy: Thanks for your concern about those of us in Orange and Los Angeles Counties.

Chase and I are safe. We are about 15-20 miles down coast from the Irvine fire, so thus far we are safe. It is an arson fire and thus there is always the concern that they will set more fires. The topography is such that there are mountains to the east from Irvine down to San Clemente, so if there is a fire, it has no where to go but west towards the ocean (where all the houses are located). The wind has been blowing very hard for the last 24 hours and oddly enough the wind is blowing so hard that the inside of my house is covered with dirt from the wind, but we are safe and staying inside.

I have not talked to Linda and Randy, but there are east of Los Angeles in Arcadia and there is no fire where they are at this time, so they should be okay. They may have smoke from the San Bernadino fire (which is farther east of them), but no fire itself.

Marilyn is in Hacienda Heights and that is south of Linda and there is no fire there either. She said they are fine and have no smoke.

Cindy is in Buena Park and there is no fire there, and probably no smoke.

Tang and Tracy are in Costa Mesa and there is no fire there, but they may be getting a lot of smoke from the Irvine fire. Costa Mesa is just west of Irvine.

Craig is in San Diego so I do not know how close he is to the San Diego fire or the smoke.

I think Lisa is inland in Perris which is south and east of Irvine and North of San Diego, so I do not know what affect the San Diego fire is having on her. She may be getting smoke from the Irvine fire.

I think Kim lives in Long Beach which is far from both the Irvine fire and the Malibu fire, so she should be okay.

I will let you know if there are any changes.

My thoughts and concerns are with Melissa and her family.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Randy, Quinn and Tessa and I are just fine. We're right in the middle of the city, in Arcadia, about 20 miles northeast of Downtown L-A, so nowhere near the fire. It hasn't gotten smokey yet, but that will change.

There are two main areas of concern: San Diego County, where Melissa is hanging on; and to the north of here, in Santa Clarita/Saugus. The fire in Saugus was declared the Number One Priority in the State of California because of the sheer numbers of homes threatened. That means all extra resources will be diverted there.

But, San Diego County looks pretty bad, and if any of you remember what happened in 2003, San Diego County got the worst of it. The entire city of Rancho Bernardo has been evacuated, some 250,000. I have NEVER seen an entire city that size be evacuated. Melissa is not very far from there.

I've lived in California my entire life, and as many of you know, I am a journalist as well. I've covered so many fires, I've lost count. But, I have NEVER, EVER seen a firestorm this bad. It is, as they say, the perfect storm: warm, dry, Santa Ana winds shooting through the mountains, gusting up to 100 mph; we already have dry conditions because of La Nina; many communities have begun water rationing, or are close to it because of an impending water shortage; tomorrow (Tuesday) is expected to break records for high temperatures, and we could see temperatures between 95 to 100; the relative humidity is in the single digits, meaning there is no moisture in the air to help keep the fire down. Also, the strong gusty winds have grounded many water-dropping helicopters and fixed wings.

"does anyone know if Linda & Randy, Marilyn, Brooke, Cindy, Tang & Tracy, Craig, Lisa H., Kim Buchanan, the Cordieros, the Bassetts, are in danger?"

The fire in Irvine, in Orange County, is the one that is contained the best so far, so our OC & LA County contingent, Marilyn, Brooke, Cindy, Vince & his family, Tang & Tracy, and the Bassetts should be okay. Kim is in Long Beach, which is well west of there. Lisa H. and the Cordieros live in Perris, which is about an hour north of Melissa. There is a fire burning in Ontario/Riverside, which is about 20-30 minutes north of Lisa and the Cordieros, so they should be okay. Glad to hear you're okay, Brooke!!

Mark and Karla should be okay in La Jolla, which is well west and a bit south of Melissa. They had that big hillslide/sinkhole in their neighborhood a couple of weeks ago!

Have we heard from Craig??

Melissa . . . Melissa, please be safe. We are all thinking and praying for you and the safety of your family.

Thanks for all the updates guys!

Melissa - we're keeping you in our thoughts and wish there was something we could do to help you stay safe other than continuing to send you well wishes!

So glad to hear that so far everyone else is ok and hope that it remains that way.

My cousin evacuated out of santiago canyon last night - they got the dogs out and last I heard this morning their house was ok cause the fire was blowing towards irvine (bummer for the irvine folks), but all it'll take is a change of direction. They live just a few miles from where the fire started - we actually take the dogs hiking more or less right at the intersection where the fire started whenever we visit them. Scary stuff!

I hope everyone's friends and families stay safe and get through this...

Glad to hear everyone is OK and staying safe. I’m currently working in Alameda monitoring the situation via phone and internet. From what I can tell our place is not in danger although many families have lost homes including a very close co-worker and his wife who lost everything except the clothes on their back. A very sad day for many who live in the fire ravages areas.

Stanley is taking care of the homestead while I’m on travel and he is also keeping everyone’s spirits up in this time of distress. The rest of the SOCAL Chessie gang is safe and currently not in danger.

Wow and I thought it was bad when the tree's blew over in the pond!!
Hope all is getting better for you all down there. The weather looked a little better from what they said. But all they do is guess pretty good.

I did not realise how bad it was until I talked with Sandra earlier and she explained what was really happening down there. I asked her "Why didn't they just load up the horses"?
Now I understand. That's quite a few!!
We here in the NW are all thinking good thoughts and sending Prayers your way!!!

It's funny how here a fire would have a hard time starting up if you poured a 5 gallon can of gas on the ground and a little south a simple spark will cause such devastation.

Looks like another day terrible day for SOCAL. The multiple fires continue to burn out of control and the winds are predicted to blow all day. Many residents are on pins and needles not knowing what the fires will do from one hour to the next. I spoke with a friend who has the dogs ready for evac if needed. We also spoke about what to pack in the car I was told the dogs, laptop, and Dock Jumping trophies are the most important items. Keep SOCAL in your thoughts and prayers today.

This morning she sent me an email at 4am saying they had met w/the fire department an hour prior and they were preparing to fight, the fire was coming upon them.they cut in a fire break around the house and hoping that will help.

NEW: CAUTIONARY WATER ALERT FOR RAMONA
A captain at the Ramona Fire Department says that the area could be without water by approximately 9 a.m. due to a power failure, which stopped a water pump. Extra water trucks are on the way to help fix the outage.

Horse Rescue: Evacuees in need of a safe location for their horses have the opportunity to stable them at a horse farm in the Thermal-Indio area. A private citizen, recommended by a California Department of Food & Agriculture veterinarian, has volunteered enough property, staff, food, and water resources to care for up to 1700 horses. For more information, County residents can contact Hans at (760) 399-2716.

More than 500,000 flee as California fires rage for third day
by Rob Woollard

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - More than half a million people were ordered to evacuate across California on Tuesday as wildfires raged for a third day, razing over 1,000 homes and threatening to overwhelm weary firefighters.

The wind-driven infernos have so far scorched at least 335,000 acres (1,355 square kilometers) of tinder-dry brush, making the blaze one of the worst wildfire crises in Californian history.

One person has died and more than 20 people have been injured in fires that erupted on Sunday and spread quickly across the region, fanned by powerful winds gusting in from the desert.

President George W. Bush has declared an emergency in California and ordered federal aid to be directed to the fire-stricken region.

Many parts of the state have experienced record low rainfalls and record-high temperatures this year, leaving vast swathes of rugged countryside bordering built-up residential areas at the mercy of fires.

"All of us across this nation are concerned for the families who have lost their homes, and the many families who have been evacuated from their homes," Bush said during an address in Washington.

"We send our prayers and thoughts with those who've been affected, and we send the help of the federal government, as well."

By Tuesday there were at least 14 separate fires throughout southern California, spanning a region from north of Los Angeles to south of the Mexican border. Some fires were so vast that they could be seen from space and smoke was so thick in the area that weather radars mistook it for rain clouds.

Several thousand firefighters backed up by 316 fire engines, 19 air tankers, 15 bulldozers and eight helicopters battled fires throughout the night.

The Pentagon has sent six Air Force and National Guard water-dropping planes to help tackle the blaze while 1,500 National Guard troops are being deployed to help manage evacuations and assist firefighting efforts.

Chip Prather, the fire chief of Orange County, said the number of fires had stretched state-wide resources to breaking point.

"The bottom line is there is not enough air assets, not enough helicopters, not enough air tankers," he said. "There are not enough resources to go round."

A forestry official meanwhile said the seasonal Santa Ana winds were making the fire impossible to contain at blazes raging near Lake Arrowhead, a popular mountain resort 100 miles (150 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

"The problem with this one has been the winds," US Forest Service spokeswoman Robin Prince said. "It's just moved the fire so rapidly that the fire crews can't keep up with it."

In San Diego, evacuees were sent to Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers American football team. By early Tuesday, 20,000 weary evacuees were huddled inside the stadium, reporters said.

Cindy Alexander, a 54-year-old woman living on disability benefit, was struggling to maintain her spirits after spending the night curled up in the backseat of her son and daughter-in-law's car.

"We've had a hard life," said Alexander, whose home in Ramona had burned to the ground. "It's like 'Okay God -- what else?'"

A statement from San Diego County officials said approximately 513,000 people in the district had received mandatory evacuation orders and an additional 12,000 people had been advised to leave their homes.

The statement said a total of 349,915 households had received calls asking them to evacuate.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said the speedy evacuations of vast numbers of residents had helped keep casualties to a minimum.

"If there's a statistic that so far stands out, it's the fact that we have had minimal loss of life," Sanders said.

"People are moving, people are getting the message and they are responding. Having said that, the weather continues to be unpredictable."

The causes of the different fires raging throughout the state varied, with a fallen power line believed to be the cause of the blaze in Malibu and arson blamed for a fire in Orange County that torched 15,000 acres.

The fires are the worst to hit California since 2003, when 22 people were killed and 3,000 homes were destroyed.

Does anyone which of the 13 fires is the one closest to Melissa? I'm sitting here watching CNN and the devastation is unbelievable. I can't even imagine. Somehow it puts life's little problems into perspective.

The witch fire is the one closest to Melissa.

Here is the latest info I have received at work.

BC-CA--California Wildfires-Evacuations,0113
Evacuation orders lifted for some San Diego neighborhoods
Eds: NewsNow.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say evacuation orders have been
lifted for three San Diego neighborhoods that were briefly
threatened by the Witch Fire.
Some residents will be allowed to return to their homes in the

San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman says people who were evacuated
yesterday from the coastal Del Mar Heights neigborhood and the
Scripps Ranch area further east in the city of San Diego will also
be allowed to go home Tuesday afternoon.
Jarman warns evacuees not to expect any further areas to be
opened until tomorrow. She says wind conditions are still
unpredictable and the fires may change direction unexpectedly.

Shari - the link I posted has info on the Witch fire which is where Melissa is. She is in Muth Valley right now.

Just got of the phone w/her - she and her Mom are doing good. They are going to go do a walk around the perimeter to make sure there are no flare ups.

Tasha - keep those updates coming, I am surfing everywhere to get them as much info as I can over the phone.

It's probably too late for the information below if Melissa is surrounded by fire and it sounds like she is determined to stay. For what it's worth here is a number for assistance in moving horses.

This came from SignOnSanDiego.com: Evacuees were offered a safe place to stable their horses at a horse farm in the Thermal-Indio area.

A private citizen, recommended by a California Department of Food & Agriculture veterinarian, has volunteered enough property, staff, food, and water resources to care for up to 1,700 horses. For more information, San Diego County residents can call (760) 399-2716.

Mary Ann Rose, who lives on Via Del Charro in Rancho Santa Fe, waited until the last possible moment to get her three horses to safety. Employees of Ride America took them in a trailer to a facility in Carlsbad.

communities, sending thousands fleeing down the mountain. One of
the fires is threatening at least 10,000 homes; the other is
threatening 400.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The goats saved the day.
A Ramona woman says her small ranch was spared by the wildfires
thanks to her goats who munched dry shrub around her property.
Therese Nerat says her neighbor was on TV saying there was only
one house still standing in the area, and it was Nerat's.
Speaking from an evacuation center in Mission Bay Park, Nerat
says she rushed out of her home Sunday when the Witch Fire raced
across communities northeast of San Diego. She says she got seven
goats out and 40 are still at the ranch. She says they're fine.
She says neighbors have been stopping by to feed the animals,
and firefighters trucked in water for them.

Thanks Sandy, I guess living and working in the City does have it's advantages. We are just fine. My daughter and grandbaby were evacuated night before last when the hill behind her condo flared up around 10:30pm but they had it out so quick that they aren't even mentioning it on the news. It wasn't part of any of the named fires around here. They just came to my house and I nestled them safely in my bed for the night.

I must say thanks so much to all that are posting what they know of the fire conditions. It really helps to have this forum.

Got up this morning hoping for some more word from Melissa. Ursula, Brian have you heard from her???

Good.... Thanks Brian. The news here is mainly focusing on Arrowhead and Orange County and doesn't really say much about San Diego except that they are still under evacuation.

I'll bet the smoke is bad since she is right in the mix. The smoke is bad here and I am miles away. My hubby kept the dogs inside yesterday so they didn't have to inhale it all day. I hope Melissa has been able to protect the dogs by keeping them inside the house or the truck but goodness the poor horses have probably had to breath that crap or days now. Can't be good for any of them human or 4 legged.

Please keep us posted and let Melissa know that we are praying for her.

About 9pm last night, a new fire broke out near San Clemente in Camp Pendelton. I live in San Clemente. It is called the Horno fire. It grew fairly large and was running along a ridge and it headed south toward the ocean (our beaches face south rather than face west) and jumped over the 5 Freeway. This is the freeway that connects San Clemente to Oceanside. For those of you who know the area, it jumped the freeway around the check point station. They closed the freeway for a few hours. The Southbound lanes are now open, but the northbound lanes are still closed.

The fire is now burning west towards San Clemente. It is a couple of miles south of the San Onofre Power plant and the power plant is a couple of miles from the houses in San Clemente. They say the power plant is safe at this time. Knowing the area as I do, I doubt it since the entire area is surrounded by brush and the power plant is a Nuclear Power Plant (scary).

Due to the terrain in Camp Pendelton, they are not fighting the fire in the hills, but rather are letting it burn. They need water dropping planes or helicopters to fight the flames, but I do not think they are going to use any. The Santiago fire in Orange County has been going on for 60 hours now and up until an hour ago, they had not sent any water dropping planes in at all. Very frustrating. That fire has grown dramatically and is still growing and going strong. Thankfully, they started the planes dropping water there this past hour. So, since they have no water planes, they are going to let the Pendelton fire burn all the way to Barcilona road where they then plan to burn back fires to stop it. Barcilona road is less than 1 mile from homes in San Clemente.

They closed the schools in the area. I think they want everyone to stay inside and off the streets and out of the way. It is very smokey and ash is falling, so Chase and I are staying inside. But, the smoke does seep into my house, so I bought Chase a surgical mask. He does not like to wear it, but if it gets bad, I may have to tape it to him! The winds have slowed down and it is a cool at the moment (expected to be 85-90 by afternoon), so that is very helpful. Just toooooooooo many fires at one time. Just tragic what is happening in Southern California.

Hope Melissa is doing okay. She must be totally exhausted.

Thanks for keeping us all up to date. Keep safe, everyone. I live in a rural area and worry about fires on my hillside but to see all the devastation and homes lost, it is so, so sad. Melissa, I am praying for you and everone else affected by the fires. We can see the Santiago flames from our house and it is truly a gruesome sight. Putting up with all the ash is nothing compared to what alot of you are going through. It's hard to sit back and watch it all unfold and not be able to help.

My prayers and thoughts are with you.

I just got off the phone w/Melissa - they managed to get some sleep even w/the few hot spots they had to deal with. She is going to try and get to her house in Ramona to pick up food (for the dogs) and clothes for herself. They still have no power.

How is everyone doing after last night? Has anyone heard from Barbara H? Craig - any update?

There is a blog spot on Sign on San Diego, I don't remember if anyone has posted this yet...but just in case...http://sosdfireblog.blogspot.com/

Brooke - you guys stay safe....my ex Mother in Law lives right outside of Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, I was dealing w/a very upset teenager last night when we heard about the Camp Pendleton fire. Ally (my older daughter) went into hysterics, it's hitting way too close for comfort for her since our loss last year.

All - please be safe - evacuate when you are told and those who choose to stay and fight - know we are here for you if you need ANYTHING!

Ramona residents should boil water
Posted @ 11:40 AM
Although Ramona is under mandatory evacuation orders, residents remaining in the city are being advised to boil tap water or use bottled water for drinking and cooking until further notice, county officials said.

Complete instructions can be found at: www.sdcountyemergency.com.

Thanks once again for all the updates.
Hopefully people will get back into their homes soon.
My aunt (in OC) originally thought she would not have any problems now may have to evacuate:-((
Melissa, stay strong and know you made the right choice as it sounds as if you hadn't of been there perhaps your home wouldn't be there now.
To everyone in the affected areas, we all continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
IF there is anything your Splashdog family can do, please let us know.
Stay Safe!

Tasha, thanks a million for all the updates. Sarah, so glad you got such a great response to help all the pets. You are doing such a great job. I've had to get up at 1:30 every morning to get on the air by 4am. I thought of Brooke when I heard our reporter, who was standing in the middle of a deserted I-5 because traffic was shut down because the fire was burning on both sides of the freeway at Camp Pendleton.

Temperatures will cool off a little bit Thursday and Friday, when hopefully the relative humidity will increase to bring in more moisture to help the firefighters at night. But the big concern is the winds. They're not blowing quite as hard, and they are expected to diminish somewhat. Losing the air drops on Monday and Tuesday has been the biggest thing, so with the calmer winds, hopefully they'll be able to resume a more effective aerial assault.

As I was driving home, I saw a batallion chief and about 6 strike teams from Kern County heading east, probably to the San Bernardino Mountains. The Malibu fire has been reduced to hot spots, so those crews can head to Orange County and San Diego, too.

The head of FEMA is here, as is Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff. The President is on his way tomorrow. This is the biggest evacuation in U-S history. Thank goodness the loss of life has been remarkably low.

Hang in there everyone. I hope we're through the worst of it.

No updates yet on the fire but there is this....

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Federal agents and local authorities are investigating the possibility that some of the wildfires devastating Southern California may have been deliberately set.
At least two of the fires -- in Orange and Riverside counties -- have been linked to arson.
The FBI has joined the search for evidence in brush-covered Orange County hills. Experts say the fire apparently had three ignition points. A $70,000 reward has been posted.
In San Bernardino County, a man suspected of starting a small fire was arrested and another man was shot to death by police after he fled officers who approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire.
The fires have destroyed about 1,500 homes and caused more than a half-million people to flee since the first blaze began late Saturday.
Authorities say patrols have been increased to in hopes of preventing copycat fires and looting.

Flying home today from Alameda was surreal and something I’ll never forget. The smoky haze started in Ventura County and only got worse as we headed south. Los Angeles was completely masked out by the thick smoke hovering the city and valley. What looks like low clouds in the photo is actually smoke from the many fires burning in Southern California. As we flew over northern San Diego the multiple plumes of smoke rising upward were clearly visible and the airplane cabin started to smell of the disaster. I strained my eyes and pushed my nose tighter on the window knowing that Melissa is down there somewhere cat napping from fighting fires for the past 3 days. The airport seems normal except for the many people wearing fire fighting clothing and emergency assistance jackets. I suddenly realize they have traveled though the same smoky skies to help with the disaster. Exiting the airport and entering the smoke filled streets for the first time in 10 days I hear that familiar sound "Smoking is prohibited in the airport terminal."

Great to hear from you Melissa. Soooooo happy you are okay. And I agree with Melissa, it could not be a better time for a vacation; fresh air to breath, an air conditioned place to sleep, and caring friends. It is going to be great.

Here is an update on the situation here. The smoke is so bad here now in San Clemente that I can no longer keep it out of the house. Since there is a complete lack of information about the Camp Pendleton fire that is still burning next to me, I decided to drive the 5 miles down to the end of town this morning to find out myself. I drove up to the Marine guarding the Pendelton kiosk and he did not know the status of the fire (not very comforting). So, I drove down another 2 miles to the San Onofre NUCLEAR Power Plant and the smoke was so thick I could barely see. They had some police cars there. So, I headed back to the freeway.

At the onramp there were now 6 fire engines lined up at Barcilona and another 6 behind them coming down the freeway. So, I called all my neighbors and alerted them and then decided to drive up here to Anaheim to my work where we have air conditioning. Chase is with me so he has some fresh air to breath for the day. My neighbors will call me if the fire spreads to San Clemente.

Looking forward to seeing all of you.

Rumor has it that fire is back burning in what is called Capitan, Barona and Ramona still in danger. This would in danger East end of Ramona and all of Barona. We are on generator power. Our property is 100% safe. We may have to watch for hot embers but that is EZ.

Prayers to Brooke and anyone else that is in danger

Please be safe. I know that should have evacuated. But really where was a safe place in San Diego for 17 head of horses? Feista island is about the only place I know.

So good to hear you are safe and okay!!! And a joy to see Stryker being Stryker! ;-) So many prayers have gone from WI to CA!!! My students have had a crash course on CA this past couple days with the fires going. I've had some walk up to me in the halls and hand me a "CNN" update on the fires that they printed off during their study halls! So you're famous in SE WI for sure!! :-)

Truly though, anything that can be done from here--please let us know! We'll keep praying for everyone!

Melissa:

Thanks for the concern, but you have it sooooo much worse than I do. The smoke is really bad at my house, but no fire yet. Thick, just cannot breathe. Chase & I got a break today at work with air conditioning but am about to leave for home in a few minutes. I just wish we could get some better info about the fire around the San Onofre Power Plant.

By the way, as far as the dogs not having an opportunity to practice in this fire situation. I have not even allowed Chase to play with his toys inside in order to keep his breathing low and the smoke out of his lungs. I am sure that is true of all the dogs in Southern California. But everyone should come to Cyno anayway. It will just be a big party where they dogs can get some fresh air, don't worry about whether they will score well or not, just everyone come and play.

Hopefully the smoke will not follow us out there!

Hi Everyone --

I'm just catching up with 11 pages of this thread - Melissa, I should have realized you were right in the midst of it all, so glad you and your crew are ok. Brooke, stay safe!

I had an appointment in Orange County on Monday and saw the very thick smoke from the Santiago Fires, which seemed way too close for comfort. The Santa Anas picked up and dissipated the smoke but the winds were so strong the conference room windows were rattling. Truly the perfect storm for wildfires to spread...

At home, we've had just a brown haze in all directions and smokey air to breathe. A friend up in Bouquet Canyon sent photos of her place on Monday with a thick wall of smoke approaching that looked like a massive tornado on top of them. There was a flare-up that night across the road but it burned itself out. Roads were closed so they were stuck. No one in, no one out. She would not leave her animals and I couldn't blame her. She was lucky.

It's all so surreal. Tho' not being in the midst of it, I've been listening to the radio and watching the news about the fires all week, imagining the millions of displaced residents and thousands of homes destroyed by the fires. My thoughts go out to those of you who have had to go thru this horrible experience. If we can do anything to help, please let us know. I hope everyone stays safe and we will see you in Scottsdale soon for a much-needed respite.

Take care,

Kim

Melissa... so glad that you, your Mom, the dogs and all 17 horses are okay. Luck and I am sure some hard work was on your side.

I got an email from a fellow flyball friend of someone who has not been so lucky. Rhonda Dunn (who was once on INXS, then moved to Turn N Spit) on the other hand lost everything. The barn where she is manager is gone. They lost 5 horses, one being Rhonda's. She was able to save one of her horses and her dogs. Her cat and birds are gone. The last heard was that she is staying in Del Mar at a hotel right now. Cris Maxwell (also formerly of INXS) was evacuated from Ramona Sun. night and is staying with friends. She has yet to go back and see if her trailer is still there. I don't know where Rhonda's property was, the email from my friend didn't say. It is just all so sad. They need to catch these a**holes who started the fires and string them up by their U know whats.

I do think although you as you said probably should have left however you staying and fighting may have saved the lives of the horses as well as the house/barns burning down. It was a very brave thing to do.

Brooke, Melissa.....keep staying safe and update us when you can.

Four charred bodies found in migrant camp

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say four charred bodies have been
found in what is believed to be a migrant camp just east of San
Diego.
A spokeswoman for the San Diego County medical examiner's office
says the bodies were found in a wooded area near Barrett Junction,
along the Mexican border in unincorporated San Diego County. The
area is near a major corridor for illegal immigrants who often walk
hours or even days to cross into the US from Mexico.
Authorities say they discovered the bodies this afternoon in an
area that was burned by the Harris Fire, which straddles the
Mexican border. That was the same fire that claimed the life of a
52-year-old Tecate man who refused to leave his house when the area
was evacuated Sunday.
It's unclear when the four victims died.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted
for most residential areas of San Diego and emergency shelters are
beginning to empty at a rapid rate. Still, some areas are too
dangerous to return to, and in some areas, evacuation orders are
still being issued. Among them is an area south of San Diego where
rural communities on the Mexican border are under threat.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say at least five people have
been arrested for arson since wildfires broke out across Southern
California this week, but none has been linked to any of the major
blazes. Meanwhile, a fire chief expressed outrage over a blaze that
investigators say was intentionally set in the foothills of Orange
County and destroyed nine homes. The fire, he said, diluted
suppression efforts elsewhere in the region.

Ramona is no longer threatened by fire, but residents remain locked out of the community because of a major water problem.
Ramona's water operations manager, Ron Mulick, said he doesn't know when water will be restored and said it may be a couple of days before the “extreme water crisis” is over.

To make matters worse, residents who did not evacuate or who sneaked back in are hampering the agency's efforts by turning meters back on and using the water for everything from irrigating their lawns to flushing the toilets, Mulick said. All water use is prohibited in the rural town at this time.

The Ramona Municipal Water District is working around the clock to refill the town's water system, which includes 20 million gallons of storage tanks as well as 200 miles of pipelines.

It's a slow process. The pipes have to be cleared of air and slowly filled so they will not be damaged. Only after the pipes fill up can the storage tanks begin to fill, which will bring back the water pressure.

The system was completely emptied when power was lost to the main pumping station as firefighters battled back the flames that threatened the rural enclave.

Firefighting aircraft filled their tanks with Ramona's water supply and many homeowners left sprinklers running when they fled their homes. Also, as homes were destroyed, pipes were broken and water leaked freely, Mulick said.

The delays are causing tempers to flare as hundreds of residents are blocked from returning to their homes.

County Supervisor Dianne Jacob placed the blame on the municipal water district. She said officials there worked regular hours this week when they should have been on overtime trying to address the problems.

She said it took a meeting Thursday morning between Walt Ekard, the county's chief administrative officer, Maureen Stapleton, head of the County Water Authority, and a top fire official to persuade the district's general manager to seek their aid.

“People are angry, I'm angry and rightly so,” Jacob said. “People should be outraged that their water district took so long and refused over several days to make this request.” But Mulick said water officials did not immediately request mutual aid from the county because they were already getting help from the County Water Authority as well as SDG&E. The agency made the official request Thursday.

Mulick said he and his employees are working non-stop and that several of his staff members were camped out in the parking lot in motor homes.

Mulick said the water district has not faced anything of the magnitude of this week's fires.

“I apologize that we can't do more,” he said. “We're doing everything we can.”

Water crews are visiting homes turning off meters were water is being used. But it's an uphill battle.

Mulick said he has heard reports of people going through neighborhoods and turning meters on. He said that's a huge problem and that just delays the restoration of the system for everyone. They have called the Sheriff's department to ask for assistance.

“Please don't use the water,” Mulick said.

The county will sent portable toilets and bottled water to Ramona, Jacob said, but she urged residents who forced their way into the community not to turn on their faucets. The water could be contaminated and any attempts to use it could also leach away water needed for the fire fight.

“I understand their anger, but at the same time people need to understand what the problem is and going back and turning on the water could make it worse,” Jacob said.

Melissa.... what are you doing for water?? Hope you were able to get some of that free water from the 7-11.

Ok fine.... if she must she can go ??? (well you know) on a burnt bush but what are the horses supposed to drink??? The nightmare continues......

Here is a satellite image that shows how the smoke is traveling:
http://www.osei.noaa.gov/iod.html
Each day they have a new image. Yesterday they had a .gif image that gave a time lapse and you could see the smoke travel across the region out to the ocean.

If anyone else has Google Earth, there are updates for the fires:
http://earth.google.com/
Google Earth is a satellite program with still image photography of the earth with extremely fine detail. I was able to locate the homes of a couple of friends to see that they were outside the fire zones. It does not show the actual fires, but indicates the impacted areas. Cannot guarantee the accuracy, but it is supposedly "updated" and at least another reference.

Thieves and scam artists try to take advantage of SoCal fires

SAN DIEGO (AP) - In the words of one volunteer: "It's the worst kind of crime you can commit when you take advantage of a situation like this."
Crooks posing as weary evacuees have tried to fill their pockets, pickup trucks and even tents with piles of donated food, clothing and toiletries at the largest camp for victims of California's wildfires.
At San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium, volunteer Karen Huff says she and other volunteers alerted police earlier this week when they spotted a half-dozen people loading two pickup trucks with relief items. Police confronted the thieves and recovered the goods.

The Qualcomm Stadium evacuation center was one of many places locals called home during the fires. This photo album link http://signonsandiego.lamphost.net/qualcomm?page=1
shows how quick the community came together to help each other. I believe Qualcomm is where Sarah (Splishsplashcash) spent the entire week helping those who were forced to evacuate. Thank you Sarah for your tireless work.

Hi everyone:

The air at my house and unfortunately inside my house is still really smokey, but the Pendelton Fire is almost contained, so that is good news. So, no longer any threat, except to the lungs. For any of you who are in smokey areas of Southern California and do not have air conditioning in their homes (like me), put your dog in the car and turn on the air conditioner full blast and put it on recirculate (so it does not pull in the outside air) and drive around to get a break. That is what I have done with Chase. We are at work now and the air is cleaner here so I ran Chase around outside for a few minutes to get some fresh air into his lungs.

By the way, if any of you are considering moving at some point, you should consider San Diego. Those San Diego people are angels. Somewhere between 750,000 to 1,000,000 people which is 10% -20% of the entire population of that county was evacuated and everyone in that community banded to gether. Just amazing.

Here is a web site that shows the devastation to San Diego; the fire boundaries and evacuation boundaries, etc.

I cannot wait to get to Scottsdale and see you all and see Melissa's pups running around in the fresh air.

Some Southern Californians return to neighborhoods as others evacuate...

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Nearly half a million acres have burned across
Southern California this week, and the fight against the flames
remains far from over.
Nine uncontained fires of a thousand acres or more are burning
in four counties. The largest is the Witch Fire in San Diego
County, which has torched nearly 200,000 thousand acres.
Authorities have issued a mandatory evacuation for another
community -- the town of Julian, with a population of about 3,000.
Some 1,800 homes have been lost so far, 80 percent in San Diego
County. The property damage in the county alone has surpassed a
billion dollars. The fires are being directly blamed for three
deaths, and seven others are being called fire-related because the
people were evacuees.
Thousands of evacuees have been returning to their
neighborhoods. The lucky ones are finding their homes standing in a
blackened landscape.
Officials have opened assistance centers in the hardest-hit
communities. There, displaced residents can get help with
insurance, rebuilding and even mental health counseling.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES-TRIBES
$5M in aid directed to SoCal tribes

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The federal government is directing more than
5 million dollars to help American Indian communities repair damage
from Southern California's wildfires.
Funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development will be available to repair homes, pay for temporary
housing, restore communities' centers on tribal lands and other
costs.
Wildfires have destroyed 100 homes on four Southern California
reservations, including Rincon, La Jolla, and Barona.
Other reservations have been evacuated. They include Pauma,
Pala, Sycuan, Jamul and Viejas.

CHARGERS-WILDFIRES
Chargers, Houston Texans to play Sunday in San Diego, as
scheduled

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chased from their homes and practice fields by
deadly wildfires, the San Diego Chargers will return home to play
the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday as scheduled.
The game's date and time had been in doubt because Qualcomm has
been used as a major evacuation center during the wildfires that
swept San Diego County.
Some 46 players, coaches and staff members had to evacuate their
suburban homes starting early Monday morning. Among them were
LaDainian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, coach Norv
Turner and general manager A.J. Smith.
The team canceled practice Monday, then flew to Phoenix Tuesday
night for three days of practice at the Arizona Cardinals'
headquarters. The Chargers are scheduled to practice in Phoenix
this afternoon.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities investigating a destructive Southern California wildfire set by an arsonist are asking for the public's help in finding a truck seen in the area when the fire started.
Authorities released a picture of a white Ford F-150 on Friday and say they want to talk to the driver. They are not calling the driver a suspect.
Investigators say the vehicle was seen around the time the fire broke out in an Orange County canyon.
The fire has burned 26,000 acres and destroyed 14 homes in the foothills east of Irvine.
Authorities believe the blaze was deliberately set because they found two ignition points within a short distance - a common sign of arson.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rain in some areas of Southern California is helping firefighters battling wildfires -- and more precipitation is expected.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the more than 58,000-acre Ranch Fire in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles in Ventura County was fully contained during the night. Crews are working to complete lines around six other big fires.

Meanwhile, clouds are streaming inland from the Pacific, with
meteorologists predicting areas of drizzle and light showers through Wednesday morning. At the same time, forecasters say there's a chance that moderate Santa Ana winds will return by Friday.

But the National Weather Service says they won't be nearly as strong as those that spread fires last week.

re.......

I know that most of you already know of the devastation that Rhonda is enduring but I thought that I would post the email and website that will give you all a full account of her horror. I am warning you all now, her story is devastating. It would be great if anybody could help out. She lost everything and really needs our help.

Crosspost from CalFB by Stacie Giambastiani (TurnNSpit Flyball Club)

Words can not express what has happened to our team member, Rhonda Dunn, during these wild fires in San Diego. As I am sure most of you have been following the list, Rhonda has lost everything. She needs her flyball family right now...she needs our help! Turn N' Spit will be collecting donations at the Cynosport Championships in Arizona this weekend! Please show your support and donate! We will have posters for you to sign, give your thoughts and words of encouragement! We will be presenting these to her along with all the contributions we have collected over the weekend. Some of us on TNS will be making a detour on our way home from AZ and stopping by to see Rhonda and give her all that we have collected.

Please read and the follow website set up im memory of all she has lost and what she will need to move on. If you will not be at the championships and would still like to donate...there is all the information you will need on this website.

Thank you for sharing that. As hard as it was for me to read I am glad to have read it and now be able to help. I will be donating as soon as I get my next paycheck.

As a horse owner and animal lover my heart breaks knowing how hard it must have been to drive away from those horses.

I am so saddened by her loss.
