Don't be nervous. You will have a great time and no one will judge you if your dog refuses to jump or acts up, because it has happened to all of us at one time or another. Just go there and tell them you have never jumped before and need some advice.

But DO NOT be nervous, because if you are nervous, your dog will SENSE that you are nervous and then he will not trust you and he will be afraid to jump. It all has to do with your dog trusting you and feeling comfortable on the dock. Basically you are asking your dog to run full speed and fly off into the sky and into the unknown below. That takes a lot of trust in YOU that you would never let him do anything that would hurt him. If he senses that you are nervous, then he will be nervous also.

You will do great. Just relax, play and have fun. You will meet some very nice people and have a great bonding experience with your dog.

Probably not, because we live in Southern California and I think that the Chula Vista Pool Dog Days Swim Party in San Diego is that weekend. But, I will let you know if things change. You will have a blast. It is so much fun. Enjoy!

Hi there,
Not sure if other members of H3D are planning on making the trip down but I have it tentatively on my schedule. Number of club members who make the trip, will probably depend on the weather over the mountain for the drive down. Please come over and say hi and I will be happy to help out anyway I can. The nice thing about the winter events is there don't tend to be a ton of people so you usually can get in a fair amount of practice. Please note though, jumping at the Marina is very different from the setup of the dock and pool so please be prepared to be patient with your dog. If you let the wranglers at pool side know this is your first event they will help you or simple ask any of the competitors that have dogs that jump and most people will help you out anyway they can.

If we have 3 or more dogs who want to do sv we could add it to the schedule. As of right now, we don't have anyone that I'm aware of coming who does sv.

Please post or email info@splashdogs.com if you are interested in competing in sv at sacramento.

Pete and Chief will be in the house! San Mateo too! Can't wait!! We hope some more west coast events pop up. Chief has been fetching lots of dead honkers that weigh well over twenty pounds so he is in excellent shape! Merry Xmas everyone Pete, Lorry, Chief, Reagan , Buford, Shauna, Digger, Trapper, and the newest addition to the family twelve week old Stella. Happy New Year

What is the starting height going to be on SV this year. I noticed on the 2007 rankings that there were heights below 5 feet. I know many pups last year...including Chloe, couldn't quite make 5 feet. Might get more participating if the starting height is lowered a bit?

Thanks Wendy...

If we have 3 or 4 dogs interested in paying the wave fee, and it's a small enough event that we don't risk running late on other scheduled waves, then we're more than willing to start at a height like 4'6".

If you guys want SV at sacramento and plan on entering, please email me at: info@splashdogs.com and we'll do our best to work it in.

Thanks!

Hi All - Merry Christmas !!

Emmie1020
We're from Reno, member of H3D, and will be at Sacramento. If the weather is bad, we usually use HWY 70 thru Chico/Oroville to Sac. Alittle longer, but not as bad as going over I80. We'll be there on Friday thru Sunday. I'll make myself known. So don't be nervous, it's a blast for the humans and the dogs. I'll be the red head w/the matching Chessie.

I'll be there on Saturday! Still working on who will be joining us. Vandal and Ally may take to the dock together for their first time- but we'll see, you know those teenagers, always something different from the day before, lol

Gunn may be coming out to do some more practice jumps as he did in San Mateo.

Emmie - don't be nervous, the Splash Dog family will be there to support you completely!

Buck & I will be there Saturday for the 1 & 3pm waves and have decided to Motel 6 it that night so we can jump Sunday. You never know, Buck may decide to plop a little farther this time! I also bought myself some waterproof pants...I seem to get wetter than Buck does - of course that's because he dries himself off on me!

Looking forward to seeing you Emmie and all!

Emmie,
We will see you there. Remember to show Charity the ramp a few times BEFORE going up on the dock. Seen it too many times where the dogs don't know how to get out and end up scaring themselves. Also, remember not to use the whole dock before your dog is ready. Again, we see this all the time with new comers; they sit there dog way at the back and then dog comes running down and slides to a stop at the end of the dock. Much better to build confidence by starting close and moving back slowly. The idea is to get your dog jumping with NO hesitation so start short and move back in small increments as long as Charity isn't hesitating at the end of the dock.
See everybody soon

Thank You so much for the Tips! :)

I thought maybe using the practice Jump time to show her the ramp... Knowing her though she will have no Hesitation but you never know, Right? :p
I was debating on How much of the ramp to use so thank you for Clearing that Up for me.

My daughter Julie (age 14) and our 2 y.o. yellow lab Ginger will be jumping. We can't wait. We will be there for all 3 waves on Saturday.

Don't be nervous about it at all. It is so much fun and everyone is so helpful. What I like about it is the sense of community and family. Everybody cheers for everybody else.

I posted this in the H3D board but thought I might get more response from here to my questions.

This would only be our second competition, our first being the NV State Fair, and we were thinking of going possibly just Sunday, but I had a few questions I was hoping someone could answer.

1. Is it OK to jump them in 50 degree weather? Katie (my golden retriever) just turned a year and never really grew a winter coat so we have been pretty careful about not letting her get to cold (sometimes she starts shivering if she is out to long) any suggestions on this? I know she would love to go but to me the most important thing is her and if I am endangering her by letting her get wet and cold... well I don't even want to think about how awful I would feel if she got sick, or am I just being a worry wort and she is a strong dog and will be just fine?

2. Are they doing vertical jump at this competition? I didn't see it on the list with any of the waves. We really want to try it as Katie's favorite trick is to run at our glass sliding door (you should see the mud on that thing) she has gotten so good at it her nose goes above the top door jam. I think that is high but really don't know so would like to try it. (and vertical jump has got to be safer/better for her then face planting into our door, and yes we have try to deter her from it but she only does it when we aren't by the door)

3. Anyone know about driving over the mountain problems (live in Reno)? I heard there is a big storm coming this weekend, we have an SUV but no snow tires or chains so want to make sure we are prepared for the worst. But would rather no have that expense if possible.

Any help/suggestions to the above questions would be great, obviously the sooner the better so we can make plans to go if we can.

And Reno told me the reason he stopped jumping during the finals was that he finally noticed that three-headed hungry shark swimming around in the bottom of the pool.

Wait...wait....

there is no difference from last year!!

Sacramento was our second event ever last year. We competed in the pro finals because there were only 4 dogs that qualified in the pro's and Tony invited whoever competed in the Senior finals to compete with the pro's. At the time, we were so excited cause Chloe got a personal best in the pro finals with a 17.03 and we finished in 6th place.....Got a green ribbon....and here again a year later.....we jump two feet farther....and we get a green ribbon for 6th place......

Not as many big jumpers this year.....but....we are so glad to see so many more jumpers!!!

Last year the largest wave was 26 people.....I bet the largest wave this year was close to if not larger than 40 people.....so great to see!!!

Dave

PS....congrats to Madison and Hunter....they repeated their 2007 Junior Handler Championship...with a 2008 Junior Handler Championship!!
