As Ruger and I are new to the sport, I was wondering if some of the "old" timers could give me some pointers on what training regiment for a new puppy I should be using? And at what age should I start training? Ruger is now 3 months old.

I have a video from Sportsmutt that I will give to Tasha this weekend. This will be a great help to you. Good luck with that darling puppy.

Never too early to start training the "sit stay"
Remember though with youngsters, keep training sessions short and fun.

I would be working on building the dogs drive and confidence. Take the pup everywhere, expose him to everything, encourage (never force) him to explore and climb everything.

Remember the two things that make a dog jump off of a dock are confidence and drive (desire for the toy).

I would be running the pup only on sand to prevent any damage to joints as the pup grows. I would be encouraging the pup to swim as much as possible.

But mainly I would work on drive, conditioning is easy, you can do that at any stage in a pups life but the drive is something you want to harnes at a young age.

Good luck.

Thought I replyed to this earlier, but I don't see it here? Anyway, thanks for the infomation. Heading out to the lake with my good buddy Andy to play in the water. I see where Mr. Maximus got a cake for his birthday, wonder why I didn't get one this weekend when I turned 14 weeks? Gonna have to have a chat with my owner? :)
