Water Toxicity -Dogs and People can die from it :-(
Hi all you splash doggers.
A friend of mine just sent me this story of a dog who almost died of Water Toxicity Wow... I had never heard of it before  My girls Nevada and Karma practically live in the pool and they swim lots everyday and now Nevada dives too. Thank goodness neither one of them drink much water but I thought with all the dogs that I have seen over the years that do laps in the pool all the while drinking up the water that they could possibly be injesting too much and might get in some danger. Please see the link below of a dog who almost died from injesting too much water. I thought it could be a real concern for our water crazy pups and wanted to share. Hope the link works. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=140230246893&id=1301894072&ref=mf " |
We have to watch Twizzy in the water - he takes in a lot of water every time he swims or jumps. When I first got him into the water his breeder mentioned water toxicity as his Dad nearly died from it. The breed has a short neck and well it's hard to hold up a bowling ball of a front end.
If your dog takes in a lot of water when they swim put them in a life vest with the under the neck float strap - it keeps their jaw line above the water so they don't take so much in. |
London cannot ever jump for a tennis ball for this reason. She has gotten wobbily taking in too much water on her return. She only jumps for a Loopie, Wubba or a Bumper because they keep her head out of the water.

Glad to know that both of you, Urs and Candis are/were aware of this condition. Wow Candis... being wobbliy is a beginning sign. EEEK not good :-( I would think Urs that you need to really watch Vandal too cause of her marathon swims. I was watching her lap up the water at the Bass Pro. I know given the chance she would stay in the water for hours so it could be of a real concern.
