Default Auburn, CA --Proposed dog limits/breed specific leg.

I'm more of a lurker over here but since we were just in Auburn...

CROSSPOSTED from www.chako.org

I attended the Auburn City Council meeting to express my and Chako's opposition to the proposed breed-specific ordinance that singles out Pit Bulls and limits residents to owning no more than 2 dogs per household. Twenty-eight other people also spoke, including Cindy Long with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier parent club and Lynn Howe of New Hope Rescue. All but one of the speakers opposed the ordinance. One of our associated veterinarians, Dr. Randy Robinson, also got up to speak about his experiences as a practicing veterinarian. He urged the council to oppose the ordinance and gave concrete evidence showing that breed specific legislation doesn't work.

Two member of the city council stated they would vote NO on any breed specific ordinance - those are Mike Holmes and Bill Kirby. Bill Kirby does not like Pit Bulls, but he said he won't support BSL. Keith Nesbitt and Kevin Hanley hate Pit Bulls and have stated they will support BSL. That leaves one swing vote. Mayor Bridget Powers. bridgetpowers@sbcglobal.net Most of the city council agreed the two-dog limit was far too restrictive, and they are at least modifying that portion of the ordinance before it goes to a second reading in front of the council on June 14th -- but the Pit Bull language is still in the ordinance and still moving forward to a second reading.

We urge everyone to spread the word on their Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and other social networking sites. Encourage all Auburn residents to email Mayor Bridget Powers and ask her to oppose any breed-specific ordinance. Attend the city council meeting on Monday, June 14th at 6 p.m. at 1225 Lincoln Way in Auburn, CA. Even if you do not live in Auburn but you visit friends and family there, own a business there, or volunteer there, you should still email Mayor Powers and respectfully express your opinion.

The ordinance includes many breeds as Pit Bulls, including miniature Bull Terriers (there was one in attendance last night)

We will soon be posting video on our youtube channel from last night's meeting.
