Default Here's the front page story on Bryan:

Son salutes mother with light display

Ken Vance, staff reporter

Bryan Miller is looking for a little help from above this Christmas.
The 44-year-old La Center resident has suffered through the most difficult year of his life and he knows it’s not over yet. The worst day may very well still be ahead.

“It’s going to be a really hard day,’’ said Miller, referring to Christmas Day.

Miller lost both parents in 2008, so this will be the first time he will be without them on Christmas. His father, Greg Miller, died at the age of 68 in June in California. His mother, Sharon Loomis, died in his arms of a heart attack in August. Loomis, who was 64, lived with Miller in his La Center home for the past three years.

Miller and his mother had a close relationship, which is revealed in the pain Miller is dealing with over her loss and also the even more severe pain he is anticipating on Christmas. Even though his mother has passed, Miller is looking for a little help from his mother on that day.

As a monument to his mother, and a reminder for her to look in on him on Christmas, Miller has constructed a Christmas light display at his residence at 625 E. Dogwood Ave. in La Center. The display has about 35,000 lights and features the message “4 Mom Miss You’’ on the roof.

“I told her in my own way, so she could see it from above, that I’m going to need help on that day,’’ Miller said of the message. “It’s going to be very hard.’’

This is the sixth year Miller has had a light display on his La Center home. He said it was always something he shared with his mother, who received a great deal of joy from her son’s creation. “Boy did she,’’ Miller said. “Her favorite thing was watching me fall off the roof. That and the kids’ birthdays were her big things.’’

Miller, who is single, has four children--Bryan (age 21), Matthew (20), Michael (18) and Megan (13)--and all but Matthew lives with him.

Wendy McGraw, a friend of Miller’s and active La Center community member, got things rolling six years ago by giving Miller two boxes of Christmas lights. Each year, Miller’s collection has grown substantially.

“This year it’s pretty wild,’’ Miller said. “I’ve never been able to hang out all of my lights before. But this year, I had to buy more.’’

Miller said he has handmade all the props that the lights hang on, including an 8-foot by 8-foot star that sits atop a 40-foot Douglas Fir tree in his yard. He has too many trees to count, of various sizes, in his yard, all lit with lights.

In addition to the message to his mother, Miller said he has tried to adopt a Gingerbread theme this year, but he admits it’s a rather eclectic combination of lights and props.

Miller isn’t trying to draw attention to his work, but it does bring him pleasure when someone drives up and appreciates it. He was moved recently when a passer-by stopped and offered kind words.

“When they sit there and just say ‘thank you,’ that’s the whole thing right there,’’ Miller said. “It’s not that I want the credit. It’s just the fact that they’re enjoying it.’’

And, he hopes, so is a special person watching from above.

Bryan,

I've never had the pleasure of meeting you, but I can certainly empathize with your loss, as we have had loss this year as well. But, seeing your touching tribute to your Mom, it just makes me smile in a time that hasn't been easy to do so. I KNOW that she is looking down on you, beaming with pride that lights up the skies.

Thank you for sharing your creations with us. We are thinking of you in this difficult time.
