Gosia, I'll be expecting a copy of the magazine next week! Also need to schedule some pool time with us once we dewinterize it. Gotta see what Blink can do without the vest. Nevada is a wonderful role model for Blink to choose.

Life jacket helped a lot and he loves the water. I'd like it to stay that way

Maybe this summer we'll make a point to go out take swimming lessons. Obviously it would be great if he could figure out how to swim. I didn't think he was going to jump anywhere near that far or really love the game so much.
I guess he found his niche, so I suppose we'll get out to some reservoirs around here this summer and go practice the doggie paddle

It was great to have met you and Nevada (our bc role model) last year at Cynosport, hope to see lots of you back this year too! Gosia and Blink
Ahhh Gosia.. what a nice thing to say Hmmmm sounds kinda like the way a horse swims. Interesting??? I had a greyhound/weim mix that used to swim like that. What I saw was when her butt went down and the head started to go under she would panic and flail even more which made it worse but over time she learned to level herself out. Well, Blink is a border collie (much much smarter) and with a little direction and helpful butt lift I am sure that he will figure it out. Goodness I would say his confidence is pretty far up there so the vest is certainly working that is for sure.

Ahhh you guys are giving me the warm and fuzzies

There ya go Gosia Dave is the perfect person to help you out. He has the patience of a saint. He will get Blink swimming like a pro. I think we all want to see what Blink will do without the vest possibly hindering him. I see 28 feet........ and hope I am there to witness it.

Default Supscriptions + Butt-sinkers

Regarding new subscriptions: I subscribed on Jan 3rd and still wasn't in time to get the Jan/Feb issue ;( They told me you'd have to subscribe by December to get their Jan/Feb mailing. Perhaps someone will bring an issue to the next events for those of us who couldn't find a Dog Sports copy anywhere.

Regarding butt-sinkers: my little Hannah was an embarrassment to Labradors with her butt-sinking first swims -- you're right, it terrifies them and they start to flail and further sink, which causes more flailing, etc. I'm amazed that Blink will jump in since Hannah wouldn't go near the water after her first sinking episodes so you're ahead of the game. We did swim lessons with her last summer (in a vest) and helped her learn to keep her butt up by luring her forward with a toy and a hand under her belly. It took a while but one day the little lightbulb went on in her mind and now we can't keep her out of the water and she dog paddles with her nice level body. Good luck!

Gosia - practice, practice, practice. Keep that vest on until he is 100% comfortable, especially since he is such a confident jumper. Twizzy was actually the one I had difficulty with, you know Staffy's aren't known for their buoncy...we had started swimming him for overall conditioning. Funny - your kinda working the cart behind the horse, huh,lol...but it works!

LOL - Hannah...I'm totally not surprised, have had a few dogs (even one or two labs) come out to a dock diving class and not know how to swim????

My Lab/Springer mix cannot swim at all. I've actually jumped into a 10' pool and retreived her off the bottom. We have tried everything, but she hates water so much, that I think if she didn't have to drink it she would be thrilled. We brought her to the Sac event, and she wouldn't get within 15ft of the pool, and my boyfriend had a hard time getting close enough to get good pics while holding onto her leash. She was jumping puddles all day long. We joke that she's a CLab- Cat+Lab. Oh well, at least one dog in our family loves water!
