Default Extremely Urgent!

URGENT HELP NEEDED TO RESCUE 150 ANIMALS SCHEDULED FOR EUTHANASIA

Central California Shelter to Euthanize Entire Population By March 7

Butte Humane Society is organizing a rescue effort for at least 150 animals slated for euthanasia at a Central California shelter. The high-kill shelter, who asked to remain anonymous, is moving to a new facility on March 1 and has decided to euthanize the entire shelter population - about 100 dogs and 50 cats - so that no possible disease will be brought into the new facility. No major infectious diseases are known to be within the population, though a few dogs have bordetella (kennel cough) which is easily treatable with antibiotics. The shelter’s staff will be vacating the old facility and moving to the new facility on March 1, and will be allowing their volunteers to run the old facility for the rest of that week, until March 7. The shelter’s volunteers are desperately scrambling to place the animals in permanent or temporary homes, and are willing to transport the animals to other shelters, rescue groups, and foster homes.

Butte Humane Society has agreed to take as many animals as space permits and is working to find foster homes in our community. If you can provide a temporary home for one or more of these animals, please contact the shelter at 530-343-7917 or e-mail kimthompson@buttehumane.org. You will be required to complete a foster volunteer application and verify that any pets you own have current vaccinations. BHS will provide any necessary medication and can provide food and other supplies for their care. These animals will need to be fostered for at least one week to ensure they are healthy and ready for adoption, and as space opens up in our shelter we will take in the animals and place them up for adoption. If foster parents can care for the animals on a more long-term basis, BHS will work to adopt out animals directly from the foster homes.

To all outraged people:
It would be better for any interested parties to contact Sharon Lohman (no relation to me but a dedicated animal person like me) CP 209-769-2122. Her email address is slohman@pacbell,net I phoned Sharon this morning to get an update. AAARF took dogs from Merced County 3 years ago and I became acquainted with Sharon then. She is a lovely hard working and dedicated woman. She is with the only rescue group who has hung in with the Merced County Animal Shelter to try to make things better for the animals. She has all the details and can answer any questions people have. She wants to make this a win~win situation for the animals. There is no time for finger pointing and name calling. The situation is what it is and nothing is going to change that at this point. Government change is slow. The animals are the top priority so we all need to grab a box of kleenex, get the sobbing and the name calling over and then go to work to save as many as we can. The window is a bit bigger now. Sharon said they are looking at March 15th before the euthanizing will start, but maybe we can prolong that a bit with the right actions. The Merced County shelter is 40+ years old. Kennels designed for 1 adult dog house 4-5. Kennels designed for 1 small dog house about 10. Some can't make it to the food bowl often enough and lose weight. Some can not make it inside from the outside run area that is with each kennel because of overcrowding therefore they are out in the rain. Enough good food and medical care are practically non-existent. Look at Sharon's groups web site www.trailsofhappytails.org Her volunteers will be taking more pictures of the animals and posting them to this web site late this coming Tuesday. This will include the 25# and under dogs. In the meantime you can view animals directly off Merced county's site

If there is any animal you are interested in, write down the animal number and breed and email or call Sharon. Some of these animals have already got their ticket out and are waiting for transport.

Again, please let's make this a win~win situation. Later is the time to try to make changes in Merced County's procedures. There is no time for that now. Let's focus on getting as many out as we can before March 15th. Any one feel free to cross post my email and get the word out.
