Hi everyone,

This is a sweet Black Lab that was hit by a car on Valentine's Day. The person that hit him never even stopped to see if he was alive or dead. But a woman that was a few cars behind them did. She called Animal Control to help her search for this sweet boy, that was injured. After a few hours of searching, the good Samaritan and Officer Lainy Watkins found"Cupid". He was hiding under some branches that were near a river bank. He had suffered a broken leg and multiple scrapes and bruises. But he was alive! The Officer rushed him to a local vet, where he was given pain management and had his broken leg bandaged.

Officer Watkins contacted me to help and I went to go see him, what a sweet boy. Even though he was in pain, he still stood up to come greet me in his kennel. We were able to save his leg today. It took 2 hours to repair his badly damaged leg. He will have a long recovery, with more x-rays and splint changes in his future.

I am a very small rescue. We only take in one or two small dogs at a time. So I agreed to help collect donations to help save Cupid's life.

I am very happy to report that Cupid is now in foster care and the foster mom is seriously considering adopting him. Cupid's surgery was well over $600.00 and Ann is still in need of donations as she has had to pay for this. She has only collected $185.00 so if you can see you way to send a little money I know it would be greatly appreciated.

I am the foster mom for cupid/ cyrus he is a great boy But i am not sure how to keep him quiet for 5 more weeks any tips from you lab people he is in a cast to his hip and is in a 6x8 kennel they want him as quiet as possible to reduce the risk of pressure sores poor guy is just a pup and he wants to play . I have bought marrow bones BIG ones a kong toys etc i use rescue remedy during the day if needed and sleepytime in eve any other suggestion would be great and if all goes well he will be joining us at auburn Rhonna

Thanks for taking Cupid into your home! He's sure to heal better there than in the shelter. Lab puppies are the very definition of energy in motion (we've raised 4 of our Labs from puppies) so not running around is against his very nature. Personally, I'd recommend talking to the vet about possibly using something stronger than herbal Rescue Remedy if he is moving around too much and not letting his leg heal (e.g. which is the more important thing right now so he has many years of running/playing ahead of him). I've used Ace (Acepromazine) with both my dogs and horses when it's important to "take the edge off" -- in small doses, I've never heard of long term side effects and it's cheap.

On the more productive side, this is a great time to be working on his mental training which helps with his boredom. Clicker training with simple tricks that don't require back leg movement (watch me, take it / leave it, shake, and maybe some light tug/drop) would be perfect to teach this pup who probably hasn't had much training.
