My last pup began getting accustomed to the water at about 8 weeks of age. We made sure each experience was positive and fun. You want to make sure that the temperature of the water and outside the pool is comfortable. At this point in the winter I would say hold off on outdoor swimming, especially for a new dog. If you have a heated indoor pool available, then consider yourself lucky!

As for competing, Splash Dogs recommends that your dog be at least 6 months of age to compete.

Keep us updated on your pups progress, pictures are always welcome!

Thumbs up

Stacie, the way he jumps - he didn't need to swim!!! Just 'flew' to the ramp!!
Suzy, Tinka & Mr Joe (whom is going to try really hard in 2010 to really jump off the dock)..You know that song Joe Cocker sings.."Gonna get by with a little help from my friends" . To all of you that have helped my Joe become more of a real dog, not a quivering pile of dog skin this past year..THANK YOU!!!

Cool Way to go, Joe!!!

It's been great seeing Joe becoming more and more of a "real" dog, not some scared, sad animal. I salute you for taking him on, I know there was a lot to deal with in the beginning and you have done a great job with him. Thank YOU for letting me watch and be a part of it. I look forward to seeing Joe in 2010, whether he jumps or not, he's a winner in my book! He had every reason not to trust anyone again and he did and continues to do so. . . . Thanks for caring enough to take the time to show Joe it was worth the effort (his and yours) to give it another chance!

Totally agree with Stacie! You should be so proud of what you have accomplished with Mr. Joe. There is nothing more rewarding that turning a rescue around!

Stacie - no one could have said it better..

I love Mr. Joe...you have done such a great job letting him learn to trust the world again Suzy, in time he will show you the path he is meant to be on. And I know you will be there by his side, whether it is dock jumping or maybe something else, who knows maybe frisbee - he is pretty darn springy!

Hugs to sweet Mr. Joe and Tinka too....
