Hey all,
I just saw that Mel Cottons will be offering a dock jumping fun jump and competition next weekend July 28 & 29th 10am - 4pm. Saturday will be a fun jump $5 for 1 jump and $10 for 3 jumps. Sunday is the competition, $20 per dog. I contacted them to find out the pool logistics, the dock is 24 feet and the pool is 24 feet. Two of the store managers will be judging by eye and the wave starts at 11am. Pre registration is encouraged, fee will increase by $2 for day of registration. http://www.melcottons.com/events I will be there with Vandal and Twiztid on one of the days. BY THE WAY, I KNOW THIS IS NOT SPLASH DOGS BUT IT ALSO IS NOT A COMPETITOR SO THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FINE TO POST.

24 foot long dock. No problem.
24 foot long pool. YIKES!!!!!! As I recall, Mel Cotton's had Tony and Splashdogs run an event in their parking lot last year in August, 2006. They must have thought they could "save" money by buying their own smaller pool and dock and run it themselves. Could be a bad idea. Some newbie who has never jumped and is UNFAMILIAR with how far dogs can jump, could quickly get the hang of it after a couple of practice jumps, and jump 16-18 feet and get hurt hitting his head on the end of the pool. Vandal and Twiztid should have a lot of fun, but I assume Wendy will leave Renegade at home and out of that pool!!! Brooke & Chase |

Which is exactly why I wont be bringing Gunner w/us unless I just work some short pops. Several Bay Area jumpers started at Mel's, they try to put
on a decent event. Out of the three years they have had this event, no dogs have jumped out of the pool or got hurt. The dogs usually shorten up their jumps.

SDs has spoiled us...we went to Mel's today and were pretty disappointed. If you go be very careful, the turf is indoor/outdoor carpet that is pretty slippery. The end of the dock is not straight, and the exit ramp is a little steep and narrow. Good to get new dogs going but any dog w/speed should probably pass for safety reasons.
I will say i think it is great they offer this to the public.

I was @ Mel Cotton's today to participate in the Dock Diving. The set-up there is Horrible! There is a gap between the dock and the pool and the surface was very slippery. It would be so easy for a dog (or person) to slip and get caught between the dock and pool....a dog could break their front legs very easily. I checked the pictures on the spash dog website......their (Mel Cotton's) dock is embarassingly shoddy compared to Splash Dogs.
BEWARE......this is very Dangerous. I talked to someone over there and they said "you use at your own risk" I have pictures if anyone is interested. |

I have to disagree.
We were over there on Saturday. It was a day for us to practice and have fun. They had a pretty good crowd and everyone was having a good time. Keep in mind they do this once a year for us. To compare them with splash dogs is not relavant. Slash dogs is in a class of their own. Splash dogs is fantastic. But Mel Cottons was trying to perpetuate the sport in a fun environment. They had some great camping stuff on sale too. We had a nice time. |
